Hi,

A friend of mine introduced me to Misson Control, Kinky Salon, and the phenomenon that is Polly two years ago at the February "Science Friction" party. Unfortunately I let life and other people's chaos get in the way of me attending more wonderfully fun gatherings.

I am eager to join the fun again.

Models For New Michelle Tea Book

Howdy friends,
The illustrator for Michelle Tea's last book "Rent Girl" and her new book "Carrier" is looking for models for the new one for this Saturday. If you've seen "Rent Girl" or any of Laurenn's other work (http://flickr.com/photos/laurenn/sets/72057594094734074/), you'll know that the illustrations are extremely representative and you will be recognized if the photos of you are used which is cool because then you'll be in a Michelle Tea book!
So if you're interested, have some freaky duds, ARE freaky or just think a mutant superhero book by Michelle Tea might be cool to get involved in, drop me a line.

Thanks for the looksee.

Warehouse space coming available in SOMA creative complex

Hey Kids-

This is the first low key announcement as many details are still up in the air.
Just want to do a sweep and see whos interested in whats coming up and than hammer out details over the next few weeks.
In question are the opening dates, from 1-3 months from today.

The space has a working title of "the complex"... because it is.
We are a series of small warehouse spaces connected by a large undeveloped dirt lot that I have been slowly absorbing over the past year.
I have recently assumed the sole lease on the "gem" property, a 4500sqft warehouse with tall ceilings in the main performance and work area.
We are located near 5th and Folsom with extremely easy access to everything and the east bay.

It has three movie theaters, a tiki bar, a wolf range gas stove, parking and shared work / performance area with 24' ceilings.
Connected to it are 8000sqf of small business and artists studios and 10,000sqft of undeveloped lot.
Current co-tenants are an office for our non-profit 510c3: Arena Interplay
Kiosk and digital signage business rental and service workshop: Friendlyway Inc
Myself, and I have a small performance/ rehearsal space upstairs connected to my room.
A Small graphics/effects studio, still in development, with blue screen.

A plan for the usage is creating a digital video production facility for projects and would like the tenants to participate in the growth of this or something completely different they have to bring to the table.
The potential tenant must be a DIY'er as the space is still somewhat raw (although I appreciate it that way) and we are responsible for any upkeep of the builiding. No help from the building owner.
There is NO LEGAL LIVE within the buildings, commercial LEASE only.
So no residential rights can be extended to this scenario, still the lease is fair as long as we pay the rent and dont cause any trouble for the building owner with other neighbors or the city. This is why its important for the potential tenant to have a business license, they're easy to get and I can help you if you dont allready. I'm assuming you catch my drift and we can discuss details in a one on one.

I am seeking two tenants for sizeable upstairs studios.
We each should be self sufficient but definately am looking to build a collaborative community out of this project.
The rents are $750-$800 each/month- + $50 for the first parking space, $75 for any additional parking.
+ Utiitlies which average around $75+ for gas/electric/garbage/internet
+ Business Insurance (about $250 year shared).
Deposit I have to pay is twice rent, we can negotiate a payment plan for the deposit but it should total $1500.
If building owner increases rent, than individual rent would be affected. SO far 3 years without increase.

If you cant pay your rent and cant deal with having occasional public activities and clients in the space than please dont apply.
As the leaseholder I am responsible for the actions of the tenants and have just completed taking over the lease to proactively solve these problems.
Full disclosure and communication being key for positive development.

I personally have a history with group art spaces dating from being a co-founder of cellspace in 96, an early developer of monkey fresh in 2002, Front Room Gallery in New York in 98 and the Farenheit in Kansas City in 2000.
The long term goal is to purchase a building that can support our activities and create a business plan based on our current model to achieve those ends.
I am a bay area native and am 36. Have a background and degree in film and video, and am currently the DOO for friendlyway inc and am in charge of the companies operations out of the warehouse. I am in league with several other developments like this one and plan to incorporate speakeasy cinema (the current venue title) as a supporting agent to help this type of growth.
I've priced the rooms to be affordable but you still have to have your shit together to make it work.
I am interested in starting this process today so I can find the best matches for our space and get them on board as soon as identified.

If you have a ton of storage needs you should consider an off site location or purchase a shipping container to put into our yard.

Please send queries or interests/ideas bad jokes to:
skot kuiper
skot@videoamp.org

thanks and feel free to distribute this to interested parties.

I finally got off my butt and went to yoga at mission control yesterday (Monday at 6:15) and it was honestly the best yoga class that I have ever experienced.

I've been to four different studios in SF, as well as a number back in NH (not that you can tell as I am falling over most of the time). I really liked the combination of Rosie's expertise with the relaxed setting of mission control. I felt like I was doing yoga in my bedroom with some old friends.

Hands on a Hardbody!!

This Thursday (May 12th)

Mission Control Film Festivizzle presents the Documentary "Hands on a Hardbody".

This film is OUT THERE Kiddies...

Check the synopsis:

S.R. Bindler documents the contest that takes place each year at a Nissan dealership in Longview, Texas. And what a contest it is. Twenty-three names are drawn at random and these lucky folks get the opportunity to participate. The rules are simple: one hand must remain on the truck at all times; no leaning or squatting allowed; if the hand is raised even momentarily, the contestant is out. One 5-minute break is permitted every hour, and one 15-minute break every 6 hours. The last three survivors--excuse us, contestants--must be tested for drugs. The results are hilarious. The gloves irritate hands (sweat could ruin the truck's finish), legs go numb, people get on each other's nerves. Strategy is involved, cheaters are accused, competition is fierce. "It's a contest, they say, of stamina, but it's who can maintain their sanity the longest," we're told by 1992 winner Benny Perkins, who competes once again. This offbeat film shows the quirkier side of human nature while providing a thoroughly entertaining watch. Each contestant represents something, but which will win out: desperation (a woman tired of riding her bike everywhere but who can't afford car payments), determination (a toothless woman who "tr[ies] to finish everything I start"), God (a woman's church holds a prayer chain for her as she communes with Jesus by the truck), endurance (a former Marine who once stayed awake for five days), or experience (Perkins is sure he knows all the tricks)? Who finally makes it through the 78-hour ordeal? You'll have to watch this comical film to find out.

Whoa...

Of course we'll kick it off with Greg the Bunny. Then we'll show one or two "in theme" shorts... think mullets, twinkies, and monster trucks!! We'll be spinning some boot scootin' tunes during saloon intermissions.

It's red state madness!! Yeeeee Haw!!

The Mission Control Film Fest is a twice-a-month celebration where we get together to peep some films that reflect and showcase our diverse community. We'll be showing a mishmash of flicks that are cheesy, sexy, scary, funny, bizarre, funky, thought-provoking, revolutionary and evolutionary.

Every night will be different. For each film fest, we'll show a few shorts to get us going and then a feature film. Of course we'll throw in some extras:

Special theme nights!
Guest Hosts!
Kitschy PSA's and Educational Films!
Wacky Puppet commentary!
Flicks created by our very own community!
Live Action Skits!
Tiki Bar Intermissions!

So grab a snuggle buddy and mosey on over to Mission Control for a night of film, freaks, friends, and fun!

Mission Control (for exact location details call 415 789 8513)
BYOB - We'll make the popcorn!!
The 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month
8:30pm to Midnite
$8 suggested donation (help us pay off the projector bulb !!)

Another Time, Another World.... In the age of wonder.....

Enter the world of Gelflings and Skekses tonight at Mission Control. Set in a mythical land, populated with all kinds of weird and wonderful creatures - Dark Crystal was the first film ever made entirely with puppets. The production was a massive undertaking, and the story grew from the rich world created by Brian Froud and Jim Henson. It's one of Polly's favorites. She thinks she's the girl gelfling. She's starting to convince me...

We'll also be showing a short from the Brother's Quay and of course... GREG the BUNNY!!

So whether you're a Gelfling or a Skekse, get yer butts over to Mission Control for this magical event!!

DANGER DIABOLIK! Thursday April 14th

Awwww Yeahhh!!

It's time for the second installment of the Mission Control Film Festivizzle!!!

Thursday April 14th
8:30 - Midnite

Hot off the trails of our successful launch (I'm still pickin' the popcorn kernels out ma teeth), we're bringing you the ONE... the ONLY......

DANGER! DIABOLIK!

Master criminal Diabolik's got it all. He's got a black leather suit and ski mask, a pair of Jaguar XKEs, gadgets galore, an underground headquarters, and of course the ravishing Eva (played by Sixties Euro-hottie Marisa Mell). Together, the two of them pull off daring capers, staying a step or two ahead of the police, the government and rival mobsters all the while. Think the Sixties Batman TV series, James Bond, Barbarella, Matt Helm, and even a bit of Austin Powers for this distinctly Sixties crime romp.

That's right folks, sounds like... A THEME!!!**

So show up in your ninja suits, 007 duds, hot latex catsuits, eeeevil criminal attire, super-hero haute couture, or sultry sidekick sleazewear. Or you can just come in your street clothes, every superhero caper needs hapless victims, am I right?

Here's more:

Director Mario Bava, as usual, made the most out of a less-than-lavish budget, with wild sets, an Ennio Morricone score, striking photography, and a psychedelic-soaked feel all the way around, with Bava's trademark camera work making it a visual delight in many scenes. Terry-Thomas comes in as a bumbling government official (the scene where his press conference is disrupted by Diabolik's "exhilarating gas" is a classic). It's all very tongue-in-cheek fun, based as it is on a comic book from the period. John Phillip Law, of course, is no better than he ever is as the rather fey master criminal, passing off his wooden performance as "stoic", but it works. Unlike contemporaries like Bond, though, Diabolik eschews the swinging Sixties life for a happily monogamous relationship with Eva (who wouldn't?). This is some goofy brain candy that's perfect for an evening of Sixties-retro fun.

Sixties Retro Fun!?!? Holy Hotpants, Batman!

But wait... there's MORE!!

We're also throwing in some surprise shorts (believe me, they're gonna be FANTASTIC!!) to get us in that crime fighting, swingin' mood!

And if that's not enough to get your shiny tights in a bunch, we're showing another episode of GREG THE BUNNY!!

YEAH!!

Plus there'll be Hipster spy GO-GO music during the Tiki Bar intermissions. So you can totally flip out and get into it!! POW!!! BASH!!! WHAP!!!! (watch out for the shrines n' stuff)

Ok, um, so here's the deets.....

Live Action Skits!

so i need to get into some kind of exercise routine.
but i get distracted way too easily, and have no car so i'm kinda stuck hanging out around here up in the Berkeley Hills most of the time.
any ideas as to how to integrate exercise into my life? i thought i would ask here because we're all creative people and i figured some of you might have some ideas as to how i can achieve this goal. :)

Mission Control Film Festival

Lovelies,

I'd like to do a film festival at Mission Control. Something about once every two weeks. Basically a collection of short films followed by a 1 or two feature films. These films will be obscure, "out there", or recommended Superstar training type films. However, I'm by no means a prof film critic, so I'd love to have others in our community recommend some films and then pick a few. I defintitely have a basic idea of what I'm looking for.

To pull this off, I will need access to a projector, some type of sound system ( I have a home theater system I might be able to bring), a screen, sheet or a light colored wall. If things went well, I'd actually invest in this stuff myself.
I'd also need a few volunteers for helping with drinks, popcorn, snacks, set up, clean up, tickets (which will be sliding scale and returned back into mission control).

But, for right now, I'd be interested in what others think of this idea and see if anyone has access to the needed gear.

Thoughts?

C

ELYSEUM bi-weekly weave.

I've been talking to people about how to proceed with ELYSEUM. I have settled on the following plan:

Bi weekly reading performance
and
Bi weekly poetry writing/performance workshops
(on alternating weeks)

Alexandria and Jim have both said they want to help with the workshops.

I really love the people who volunteered for the last ELYSEUM. Hope I can count on good help for future events. I also got word from HAM that she was really sorry she missed out on coHosting the last one. She really wants to do it.

Now comes an issue for me... What night?

We tried Sunday night. Good turn out, but HAM pointed out that no one wants to hang out or do anything afterwords, and this reading was set up to be an early evening thing, great way to start off a night on the town.

We tried Friday night and had a blast. Nice crowd and great features. There was an erotic art show in the neighborhood and we went to HAMs house party. Now, THATs the kinda thing I had in mind! But friday night is a tough one for Mission Control, as many events from potential bookings would fall on Friday night. Even if they start at 10pm that burns the space for last min. prep and it would be rushed for us to finish. Saturday night would pose the same problem.

Monday and Tuesday I am afraid of because they are at the start of the week. People don't like to come out those nights and there usually isn't much to do afterwords.

Also, Monday night Rosie has Yoga.

Wednesday night we have SSN meetings.

Polly said Thurday night is perfect, and I agree, but I have my weekly card game (Magic) gathering with my friends that night. This it the only time I get to see some of these guys (and my guy time is important to me). Don't underestimate the power of these cards! The artwork, the math component, the well-written flavor texts and the amazing names actually do inform my writing and expand my mind.

So, that is how it is now. I would love feedback from the community as to what night I should do this on and about the prospects of the workshop.

One more thing. I am seeking grant and foundation money to support this series. If anyone has any new leads, let me know.

Sexy & Sublime Spoken Word: ELYSEUM 2

The last ELYSEUM reading was such a success, I’ve decided to do it again! (and again, and again if things keep flowin’, glowin’, and growin’!)

Format is the same: Starting off with an open sign up list. Read if you dare or care. Bring your poems, stories, rants, journal entries, etc. You are welcome to read as you please, but pleasepleaseplease, do NOT be boring! After the open list, we glide into the awesome featured readers.

KAREN GARMAND

Karen has been a bad-ass on the dyke poetry scene for many years. She disappeared for a while to re-situate and get herself enrolled in acupuncture school. A teacher, surfer, artist, publisher, a black belt in the Korean art of Kuk Sool Won and a practitioner of Vodun, Karen is a mystic of high caliber! Emerging from hibernation, Karen brings to ELYSEUM her well-constructed, well-written works of remarkable content and her new take on life, love and spirituality.

TRAGEDI McCABRE
(the hottie formerly known as Evil Pony Girl a.k.a Tabitha).

You’ve been stunned by her presence at the Kinky Salon. You’ve seen her at various fetish events, turning heads and dropping jaws with her amazing beauty and shocking antics. Now, she will further shock you all with her remarkable writing. I was amazed to find out that this remarkable beauty can write like no other! A complicated and compelling personality, Tragedi is an utterly unique individual of strong will, determination, self-creation and extreme sensitivity. Tragedi’s writing reflects her strength of character and her fascinating view of the world.

MATT WOLF

Matt wowed the audience at the last WordBeat Reading in Berkeley. I was there to see Julia Vinograd feature when Matt took to the stage and simply exploded with passion. His works are powerful undertakings of self-examination. With his model-quality good looks and his smooth actors voice, Matt’s presence is intense and his performance style is sharp and compelling. He will read a selection of his highly praised erotica (-bring your own Kleenex).

Brought to you by Russell Reza-Khaliq Gonzaga, a.k.a. the Sensational SENSEI.

Feel free to BYO drinks or snacks.
Bring enough to share and you’re sure to make a friend or two.

Dont miss Yoga with Rosie Cheeks on Monday- there's nothing like it! She blends in traditional Hatha and Kripulu with 1970s callanetics and the occasional "Freestyle Jiggle"
Low key, fun, healing- the perfect way to start the week!

Do you know the height of the ceiling at M.C.? I'm shopping around for a brass pole for my house & if I can find one affordable enough, I'd like to buy an extra length to install at M.C.

Thanks,

Wine Tasting Seminar at Mission Control?

Greetings fellow travellers and Superstars!
I'm tossing the idea out to you for feedback
I'm envisioning wine classes at MC; do you think folks would come? What to charge? I have a slew of materials, info, ideas and experience that would make it fun and educational. It would take some time and committment, but ultimately would just bea blast and I'd be very into it.
let me know what you think and blessings to you all (and kisses too)
